Yes, it is! To be our guest, all that matters is that you thoroughly enjoy swimming, already have a basic ability to swim, and would like to improve. In all these three areas we can help. It does not matter whether you are fast or slow, a beginner or a member of a swim club: you are all most welcome. The swims are not a race they are there for your enjoyment and often the greatest improvement is gained from the least experienced swimmers.
To allow for differences in pace, at the beginning of the tour swimmers are divided into appropriate groups. The two main swimming strokes are front crawl (freestyle) and breaststroke. You can swim as little or as much as you want to, as you can always have a break on the main safety boat. In all cases, the swim guides are there to help, allowing you to enjoy the swims often in beautiful surroundings. Before we get too technical, there are important details to address when swimming in open water:
For a cold water location, acclimatisation is vital. Three to four weeks before your swimming holiday, work on swimming in your wetsuit 2-3 times per week, always wearing a swimming cap. By week three, aim for 15-25 minutes of continuous swimming. This will provide valuable awareness of both being in cold water and of what it feels like to wear a wetsuit whilst swimming. Initially the wetsuit may feel restrictive and may rub, especially around the back of the neck. This is to be expected and the use of Vaseline or Body Glide on the wearing points will certainly ease any chafing. If you are new to open water swimming, please do not swim on your own, be gradual in your acclimatisation and certainly practise treading water. The latter is a great skill to have especially if you need to wait for a fellow swimmer or are waiting to get out of the water onto a safety boat.
During a swim tour the guides will help you with improving your stroke. Often small alterations to your stroke can have great results and we actively encourage you to ask for help.
